NC Healthy Weight Initiative

The pilot intervention focuses on enhancing opportunities for physical activity and healthy food choices for children 2 to 5 years of age participating in the WIC Program and in child care.

Policy Change
NC-HWI will conduct formative research into potential policy changes within the WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children) Program and CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program). These changes may affect the food package, nutrition education and physical activity education within these programs.

Environmental Change
NC-HWI in partnership with the UNC Center for Health Promotion Disease Prevention, will develop and evaluate a rating scale for child care centers that addresses healthy foods, physical activity and physical inactivity.

Individual/Interpersonal Change
Color Me Healthy*, a curriculum developed by the NC Cooperative Extension Service and Eat Smart, Move More...North Carolina will be used to teach child care providers, children, and their families about healthy food choices and physical activity.
